The MPs were suspended for staging a protest demanding an explanation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the Parliament House breach incident.

Five Congress MPs, including Jothimani, were suspended for the remainder of the session for disrupting proceedings in the Lok Sabha. Following this, nine more MPs, including Kanimozhi of the DMK, SR Parthiban, Manickam Tagore of the Congress, and S. Venkatesan of the CPI(M), were suspended for the remainder of the session. The motion for their suspension was brought by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.

**Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram said, “The security breach that took place inside Parliament yesterday is a major failure of the security and intelligence agencies. We are demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah come to the House and inform us of the action that the government will take following yesterday’s incident. However, they are adamant that the Prime Minister or Home Minister should not come to the House and answer.

“For demanding that the Prime Minister or Home Minister come to the House and answer, 14 Members of Parliament from the Lok Sabha have been suspended. The funny thing is that SR Parthiban, a DMK member who was not present in the House, has also been suspended. It is clear from this that the names of many people have been roughly added to the suspension list. The government’s action is meaningless. The way the government is approaching this major event that took place in Parliament is very disappointing. We will express our opposition in whatever way we can.

“We will reiterate our demand when Parliament meets tomorrow. The government must answer the questions of what happened yesterday and what the government plans to do to prevent such an incident from happening again. Our demand is very justified. Because it is about the security of Parliament. Parliament is for the people of the country; it is related to the security of the country. Therefore, the Prime Minister or Home Minister should come to the House and give a detailed report,” he said.

**Earlier, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi read out a statement. He said, “The incident that took place in Parliament yesterday is very unfortunate. It is related to the security of the members. Therefore, the government is concerned about it. As soon as the incident took place, the Speaker held a meeting of the leaders of the Houses. Various recommendations were made in that meeting. Some of those recommendations are already in place. Necessary measures will be taken to further strengthen the security of Parliament.

“It is my personal opinion that all the members should speak in one voice on this matter. It should not be politicized. Similar incidents have also taken place in Parliament in the past. On April 11, 1974, Ratna Chandra Gupta shouted from the visitors’ gallery of Parliament House. He had two guns, a bomb, and pamphlets. Similarly, on July 26 of the same year, Bibhuti Basu brought explosives to the visitors’ gallery. On November 26 of the same year, Satyadeep Singh brought explosives to the visitors’ gallery. On October 9 and 10, 1999, two people jumped off the visitors’ gallery of the Lok Sabha.”
