In Chennai Poonamallee Nasarathpettiya Yumana Nagar area, students are forced to go to school by boat as the water level is still up to waist. A video related to this has gone viral.
On December 4 and 5, 2023, heavy rains in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Thiruvallur districts turned Chennai city into a flood-ravaged area. In just 36 hours, 43 cm of rain was recorded in Meenambakkam and 44 cm in Perungudi.
In Chennai, various areas were affected, including Velachery, Taramani, Thiruvanmiyur, Royapuram, T. Nagar, Vyasarpadi, Perambur, Vadapalani, Thirumangalam, Pallavaram, Madipakkam, Perungudi, Kattupakkam, Perumbakkam, Keelkattalai, Kovilambakkam, K.K. Nagar, Koratur, Pattarai Vakkam, Kolathur, Thiruvottriyur, Kargil Nagar, Ennore, Porur, Ayyappanthangal, Thyagaraya Nagar, Saidapet, Chetpet, Nungambakkam, Purasaiwalkam, Kodambakkam, Egmore, Tambaram, Mudichur, Varadharajapuram, Nasarathpettiya, Poonamallee, T. Nagar, Kolathur, Koratur, Avadi, Villivakkam, and Mylapore. In most of these areas, the flood has receded and normalcy has returned.
However, in areas such as Varadharajapuram, Mannivakkam, Bharathwaj Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Manimangalam, and Lakshmi Nagar, people were trapped in their homes as the water had nowhere to drain. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued them by boat and evacuated them to safer places. Some normalcy has returned to these areas as well, but it is not yet complete. Similarly, areas such as Semmancheri, Ennore, and Manali were also severely affected. Some normalcy has returned to these areas as well.
As far as Chennai city is concerned, there is no major damage anywhere at present. However, it is likely to take a few more days for normalcy to return to the outskirts of Chennai. This is evident from a video that has been released. In the video, students in Chennai Poonamallee Nasarathpettiya Yumana Nagar are seen going to school by boat as the water level is still up to waist.
Yumana Nagar in Nasarathpettiya in Thiruvallur district is an area where there is no proper drainage system. This is the reason why the water is still stagnant even after a week of the rain, according to locals. Some people who have released the video have said that this is a reality check for those who say that normalcy has returned to Chennai.
