The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation is facing a loss of Rs 15 crore daily. It has been reported in the policy brief of the transport department that it has faced a loss of Rs. 4,978 crore in the last fiscal year 2022-2023 alone.

The Chennai Municipal Transport Corporation operates town buses in Chennai and its suburbs. Rapid Transport Corporation operates long-distance SETC (Express Bus) buses to various cities, including Chennai.

Government buses are operated in various rural areas in Tamil Nadu with the aim of benefiting the poor without any profit motive.

While the revenue loss of the transport corporations was slightly reduced due to the increase in ticket fares in government buses over the last 5 years, now they are incurring heavy losses due to the rise in diesel prices, customs duty, and raw material prices.

In this case, the government should give a customs fee exemption to the transport companies, and only then will the loss be significantly reduced, said the transport workers. The expectation of the transportation corporation employees is that government buses run for the poor should be exempted from the toll.

Transport Corporation employees say that only if new buses are purchased will more people show interest in travelling in government buses, and only then will revenue increase. There is an expectation that the government should take steps to buy new buses in large quantities and reduce losses.
