Udhagamandalam: Heavy showers in the Nilgiris over the past week have replenished streams inside the forest, effectively addressing concerns over the availability of water for wild animals in summer.

C Vidhya, deputy director, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (core zone) said the MTR now had enough water to cater to the needs of wild animals, as all water sources, including artificial water bodies, have sufficient water.

S Gowtham, district forest officer, Nilgiris division, said, “I found a good amount of water flowing in the streams during my field visit to Naduvattam. The water levels are back to normal in the forests.”

D Venkatesh, chief conservator of forests and field director, MTR, said, “As far as the MTR is concerned, the Moyar river has enough water, besides several streams. We were concerned about fodder for wild animals. However, following the rain, the MTR and other forest divisions in the Nilgiris are back to normal with enough greenery.” TNN
