In a bid to manage tourist flow and preserve the delicate ecosystem of the Nilgiris, the Madras High Court has mandated an e-pass system for tourists visiting Ooty and Kodaikanal. The new requirement applies from May 7, 2024, to June 30, 2024.
A special division bench comprising Justices D Bharatha Chakravarthy and N Sathish Kumar mandated the e-pass system to streamline tourism during the peak season. There is no limit on the number of e-passes issued, and local residents are exempt from this new rule.

While not technically part of the Nilgiri district, Kodaikanal is included in the e-pass mandate due to its popularity as a major tourist hub after Ooty, especially during the summer season. It is much adored for its salubrious climes, forested valleys, waterfalls, lakes, and towering granite cliffs.
