In a bid to manage tourist flow and preserve the delicate ecosystem of the Nilgiris, the Madras High Court has mandated an e-pass system for tourists visiting Ooty and Kodaikanal. The new requirement applies from May 7, 2024, to June 30, 2024.

A special division bench comprising Justices D Bharatha Chakravarthy and N Sathish Kumar mandated the e-pass system to streamline tourism during the peak season. There is no limit on the number of e-passes issued, and local residents are exempt from this new rule.

The Nilgiri district boasts stunning natural beauty, attracting visitors with its rolling hills, flowering meadows, misty mountains, lush forests, and tranquil lakes. With its pleasant year-round temperatures, Ooty is one of the most popular destinations in Nilgiri district, welcoming over 8.61 lakh tourists in 2023.

Coonoor is famous for its lush emerald-hued tea gardens set against the backdrop of the mighty Nilgiris. One of the most unique perks of visiting this hill station is a ride on the iconic Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a steam train that travels through the scenic landscape. From cascading waterfalls to perfectly manicured gardens, Coonoor is a must-visit destination in the Nilgiri district.

Kotagiri, another hill station in the Nilgiri district, is a haven for trekking enthusiasts, offering myriad nature trails suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced hikers. Offering gorgeous views of the Nilgiri Biosphere Park and Rangaswamy Peak, Kotagiri is the ideal hill station to visit this summer. Some of the most famous trekking trails in Kotagiri include the St Catherine Falls trail, the Kotagiri to Kodanad trail, and the Kotagiri to Longwood Shola trail.

While not technically part of the Nilgiri district, Kodaikanal is included in the e-pass mandate due to its popularity as a major tourist hub after Ooty, especially during the summer season. It is much adored for its salubrious climes, forested valleys, waterfalls, lakes, and towering granite cliffs. There are plenty of adventure activities to enjoy in Kodaikanal, including rowing, hiking, and mountain biking.
