Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) illegally cut around 40 trees in Perungudi over the weekend to construct new stormwater drains. The contractor and local officials failed to seek permission from the District Green Committee (DGC) before cutting them. These trees, planted by residents, had grown to five ft tall in the locality.<\/p>\n

The Perungudi lake area and neighbourhood environmental transformation (PLANET) forum planted these native trees in Kamarajar Nagar, including Arjun tree (neer maruthu), Spanish cherry (magizham), copper pod, neem, peepul, portia (poovarasu), badam and Indian cork (mara malli), a decade ago. \u201cMost of these saplings were very difficult to procure,\u201d said Sajeevan P from the forum.<\/p>\n

In 2023, GCC officials assured residents they would not cut these trees and would build drains on the opposite side without harming them. \u201cBut they did not kept their word,\u201d said Sajeevan.<\/p>\n

Since its inception in 2022, DGC mandated that any tree-cutting or transplantation proposal \u2014 whether from govt departments or private entities \u2014 must first be reviewed by the committee. Proposals are discussed during monthly meetings and members inspect sites to explore alternatives to cutting trees. While public project requests are typically resolved within a month or two, DGC expedites cases involving threats to life or property.<\/p>\n

\u201cCutting trees without the DGC\u2019s nod is illegal. The contractor must be fined 25,000 for each tree cut and should compensate by planting 400 trees immediately. Action should also be taken against local officials for not following the rules,\u201d said DGC member TD Babu.<\/p>\n

When contacted, ward 184 assistant engineer Ravichandran said the drains, funded under the KfW project, were essential to redirect water into Perungudi Lake.
